FEATURED PROJECT:

"S.S. Spartan"

Nearly every single photo ever printed in a modern magazine or book has been digitally processed. Sometimes all an image needs is a basic color correction to make the colors print more accurately, or sometimes they require other simple adjustments like re-sizing or cropping. The principles of journalistic integrity usually prevent the "doctoring" of photos that are taken for the purpose of recording a historic event. Cameras are tools for documentation and recording, and in the context of journalism, this is precisely how they should be used.

The worlds of advertising and marketing are different, however! They afford much further leeway for making more dramatic photographic adjustments. Their job is not to strictly document people, places, or things in the journalistic sense, but simply to make them look good!

This month's Featured Project deals with a photograph for a promotional brochure. As you can see, the "before" photograph is actually quite good, but is rendered unusable by a distracting light pole and an errant pink-colored lens flare. After removing the distracting elements through some careful touch-up, though, this photo is ready for print!
